Sika Thailand has partnered with the local community and the Nakhon Nayok Provincial Office of Natural Resources and Environment to plant trees and build check dams as part of efforts to restore soil moisture, prevent wildfires and reduce flood risk. The project aims to increase the number of check dams annually, in line with Sika’s capacity and long-term environmental commitment.
Check Dams: A Natural Solution Powered by Reused Materials
Check dams play a key role in sustaining soil and vegetation by retaining moisture and spreading it across both sides of the stream. They reduce water flow velocity during the rainy season, helping to minimize erosion and prevent sediment from being carried downstream. By slowing down water flow, these small dams also enhance rainwater retention and promote groundwater recharge—benefiting both ecosystems and agricultural activities, especially in drought-prone areas.
Under this initiative, Sika Thailand repurposed 41.74 tons of concrete blocks, originally used for internal testing at the plant, to replace natural stones in dam construction. These blocks were strategically arranged to form barriers that effectively slow down water flow and trap sediment.
Utilizing surplus concrete in dam structures not only contributes to sustainable environmental restoration but also exemplifies responsible resource usage and waste reduction in manufacturing. The approach reflects the principles of circular economy and aligns with the company’s sustainability goals.
