GHG Emissions

Sika monitors its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as part of the environmental responsibility the company has for climate. Since 2019, Sika has defined a strategic target for reducing scope 1 & 2 CO2eq emissions per ton sold by 12% until 2023. Moreover, the compensation scheme of Group Management and Sika Senior Managers is linked to the GHG emissions performance of the company (scope 1&2). The company will keep analyzing and reporting on GHG emissions with the aim to develop a net zero roadmap aligned with the objective of the Paris Agreement to limit the increase of global temperature to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Scope 3 Assessment and Net Zero Target

Sika is addressing climate change comprehensively in its strategic development. To do so, several projects and initiatives were kicked off in the last years as a basis for developing Sika net zero roadmap. All these ongoing projects and activities will allow Sika to define a comprehensive climate strategy with concrete long-term plans to decarbonize its business.

In October 2022, Sika finalized a 2-year company-wide initiative to systematically identify and calculate emissions from its material scope 3 GHG categories in accordance with the requirements of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP). This analysis will contribute to the definition of a climate strategy and carbon reduction pathway to reach net zero by 2050.

In 2020, Sika joined the ‘Together for Sustainability’ (TfS) initiative and became one of its 33 member companies. Through this initiative, Sika is contributing to the development of a sectorial standardized methodology regarding Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) calculation, including scope 3 reporting processes. This will create transparency in the chemical industry to enable effective reduction management.

Air Emissions

All local companies must comply with applicable laws and regulations related to air emissions parameters. Air emissions are monitored by Sika as part of its legal obligations. This topic is managed directly by local operation facilities in accordance with local regulations and internal guidelines. In 2022, Sika conducted a global survey to further evaluate the materiality of these indicators. The survey was used to evaluate the coverage of air emission measurements and the respective data available. The data collected was then used to update the calculation methodology for the year under review. This survey is planned every three years to ensure a regular materiality review and adjust Sika’s management approach if needed.

Serbia - Sand Drying Optimization

Sika continues to implement energy efficiency projects at global level. One key initiative is the optimization of sand drying processes across Sika’s sites. At Sika Serbia’s Šimanovci mortar plant, sand of different grades is used as a main raw material for volume mortars. Wet sand is sourced from the Danube river, requiring sand dryers on the production line.

Reduction of fossil fuel consumption by upgrading sand drying equipment in mortar production is one of the key measures set up to reduce energy consumption.

Optimization of Compressed Air Systems

Operational efficiency is closely linked to saving energy and emissions throughout the production process. Such savings can be found in optimizing compressed air systems. Sika sites are considering compressed air systems as a whole and are constantly keeping them optimized and maintained.

Green Car Policy, Sika Brazil

The Executive Team of Sika Brazil decided to replace standard gas vehicles with energy efficient hybrid vehicles. ​Sika Brazil also implemented a Green Car Policy establishing ethanol as a promising alternative fuel for their car fleet.

Energy Efficient Heating of Powder Dryers

The heat transfer oil network of powder dryers was replaced by electrically heated modules located next to each dryer.

Replacement of burners

Sika Brazil, replaced in its Lençós Paulista plant oil burners with natural gas burners. This activitiy led to a reduction of CO2 emissions by more than 1'000 tons per year.
